[ he kind of laughs as he watches her draw the shark ]
Yes and no. The Grand Line is hell for anyone normal, but the first half is paradise compared to what people call the New World. That's where all the toughest pirates are. [ that's where he lived!! ] And then... [ he draws another line around the grand line ] The reason most people can't just skip directly to random spots in the Grand Line is this. It's called the Calm Belt. There's no current, no wind, nothing. On top of that, it's filled with Sea Kings, those giant sea creatures I told you about? They sense any disturbance, they attack.
Yeah! [he did say that! she really wants to do that! she's also excited to try and turn into one, actually, she thinks she could probably manage it.]
Jeeze. Everything on the ocean wants to kill you. [this sounds fun, tbh] ... How do you get out of the Calm Belt if the current and stuff doesn't work?
For most people? You row. So people usually just go around to reach the Grand Line. [ turns his hand into fire ] I've got no reason to go through and out of it, but if I wanted to, it'd be pretty easy for me, though.
Striker's not that easy to tip over! And I'm faster. [ noogies her ] Anyway, I can intimidate Sea Kings with my... [ he makes a face ] Actually, that's hard to explain, so let's just call it a special technique for today.
but that's fine. she figures she still has some surprises, too. he arranges her and she just settles, stealing all his warmth. it's like having a portable heated blanket, her cat sixth sense digs it.
she's quiet for a minute, sort of just thinking, and then:] You said earlier that you don't wanna change too much stuff.
[ he can tell she is going somewhere with this but he seems unsure where. something something living free with no regrets means not going back and pressing undo on his mistakes esp. since even when it was stupid decisions he wouldn't have made a different one without being true to himself blablabla shonen bullshit ]
But me and Saya coming with you is changing a lot of stuff, I think. [she says it sort of idly.] And you being alive is changing a lot of stuff too, but it's... good, though, none of it is bad.
[a beat, and she glances up at him, a little flatly.]
Don't argue with me about that one. [it's good that you're alive and if you try to say otherwise she's going to suplex]
but then she pauses, staring out at the ocean, and:]
So like, if those are okay changes, I don't see why it'd be so bad to make other ones. [... she's really just thinking about him frowning every time he mentions whitebeard's name, honestly.] Like blah blah it's about the adventure, I don't like shortcuts, but I don't think the one I'm thinking about is a shortcut at all.
[ i'm going to be honest, he opens his mouth to argue first but then she adds the part where he isn't sick and ace kind of stares blankly at nothing for a bit ]
[ he rubs at his face a little more looking at the ocean than at her ]
I don't know how long he's been sick. He already was before I joined up. It's why he was fine dying in battle, and to make sure the crew made it out, but...
[ but. but but but oh this is a disgusting hint of hope he doesn't know how to deal with ]
[she nudges him. more gently this time, head tilted.]
But he wouldn't have to. Because you're not dying, and neither are they, and if you put this in he wouldn't even have to look for a better way out. He'd just be okay. [...] Kinda sounds like the world's a worse off place without him.
It is. It definitely is. [ he sounds so sure of that and yet himself like nyeh? he's so dumb. but he's still not looking at her when he tugs at the hem of his shorts like he needs to grab something but they are surrounded by sand ]
... You really think that'd work? [ dad would you be mad if i erased your death because i love you - ace, after doing it ]

she looks up at him and listen he's known her long enough that her expression just really suggests that she wants to fight a sea king]

I told you I wanted you to try eating one, didn't I? We'll fight 'em at some point. They live outside the Calm Belt too.

[she is seeing the problem here. she looks very amused when he turns his hand into fire, though.]
It'd be easy for you until some big nasty water snake tried to knock you into the water. [huff.] Man, I wonder how big of a bird I can manage...
[this is just an absent thought. like she's gonna fucking eagle to mordor ace to wherever he needs to go]

It has nothing to do with being weak, stupid! All they have to do is tip you over! There's so much ocean and so little you.

I think you should have Datz write in the book that Whitebeard is alive again when we go back. You could even make it so he isn't sick.

Huh.
