You and me both. [ that is, at best, a marine job, and also pirates don't hide their murders. damn. ] But there's plenty in this place we never expected, I guess.

[she has never in her life hid a murder, this is a new experience.]

Good and bad, I guess. [she echoes, with a sigh.] The trial stuff is hot garbage but at least some of the people don't suck.

I think I said the exact same thing to Reigen yesterday. [ sometimes things are bad but. the people aren't. so. ]

[she glances up at him with a little half grin.

... Yeah. He was really protective of her. And... she really wanted to protect him, too.

She lost her team, before this. [she brings a hand up to rub at her face, at her temples.] ... She didn't want to be alone.

[which is a familiar sentiment for a lot of people, but nimona relates to it pretty hard.]

... I got Satan, last week. He wasn't exactly the most popular guy. But why her?

[ can you imagine if it's because they were targeting teams with more people. hilarious. ]

I don't know, man, it - it just doesn't make sense to me. She wasn't exactly a threat. [she's a damn good shot, but whisper was so much of a better person than like half the people here. she wasn't going to kill anybody. there wasn't a reason to hit her first.]

... Maybe that was it? She was the only one they thought they could take? [ because she's small and quiet, but that's stupid, because she was still a fighter, but. ugh. ] There's no way to know without figuring out who did it.

Nobody's gonna like the answer. It's just gonna get worse and worse as the weeks go.

[she sighs, closing her eyes.] ... It's gonna be. Weird. Tomorrow. Because...

[hm. she pauses again, and then:] I don't know. There were a bunch of apples in the trash in the place I looked at. With Janeway's gun thing.

... The apples were... [ it takes him a second, because usually it's Datz, obviously, and Reigen is definitely pretending to have apples and Ace is just Not Again for one brief moment, and then: ] Hanako?

[ it is not outside possibility for Hanako to murder, and he doesn't know enough about janeway to say why he'd pick her, but... ]

I was going to focus on Whisper anyway. But we should look into it a little in case someone's framing him, too.

week 3, saturday

[ is it worse if the murder was NOT racism and was, instead, insane revenge kill on reigen. who knows but wherever they are post trial ace is looking still very mad but also frowning in concern at nimona ]

... That was a shitshow.

[ he doesn't think she cared that much that an insane person was accusing her of wanting them dead but yknow it also feels like it fits the bill of. people expecting the worst out of her? so he is also mad on her behalf there ]

mad? she's like real fucking mad, but in that quiet, furious way. she doesn't care so much that he accused her, it just - that's not new. it sucks. and it sucks that he took this out on someone completely unrelated just to hurt reigen, too.]

I've never even spoken to him, you know.

... Yeah, I could've guessed. He didn't seem like the type of guy you'd want to talk to. [ and maybe that's rude, but ace heard him brag about the strongest in the world thing and never liked him because of that, so, hilarious vindication ]

I didn't know Whisper, not really. I liked her but not like Saya or Reigen. But that's not what gets me, you know? What gets me is he just did it because he didn't consider her a kid, like his perception is the only thing that matters. Like if he says she wasn't important, that made it true.

I hate people like that. I hate people who think they're so important. People who think they're the only ones with the right answers.

... Yeah. So do I. He was always full of himself, but this ...

[ he lets out a sigh because he's mad and he has no outlet right now ]

[ which bit affected her the most, he means, because he knows reigen is definitely going to be thinking about the part where he was blamed for whisper's death ]

He said at the end that I condemned someone innocent to die because I was protecting someone I cared about.

But I'm not stupid enough to think that it's my fault that someone lost his mind and killed someone completely unrelated to all of it and then took a hostage and tried to be like, actually, you made me be a psycho!

[a pause.] It's just, he's not wrong. I don't really care, and I'd do it again. But he's not wrong, with that first part.

[ ace hums a little and shrugs ]

It's sort of true, sure. But it's not like you're the only one responsible for that. [ he's not going to go into a spiel of how they didn't single-handedly decide it either, their group doesn't hold the majority, because the fact is they still did it. ] I don't really care, about things like right or wrong or good and evil. I want to protect the people I care about. That's all.

Me too. [that's exactly how she feels about it. right or wrong, good or evil - it doesn't matter. it never really has, because good and evil, to her, are terms that don't always line up. everybody has different definitions. these are her own.]

I told Rita I wouldn't let anybody touch any of you. I meant that.
